HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, recently brought and introduced a new smartphone in the Philippines that packs a 6.5″ HD+ LCD with V-notch display, with a 2.5D Cover Glass. A MediaTek Helio G25 SOC processor powers the device that also comes with a triple rear camera setup and a massive 5,050 mAh battery for just under a friendly price — the Nokia G10. The entry-level smartphone is something you would want to consider if it is worth getting for your daily driver, or a backup for your communications, social media, and mobile connectivity consumption.

Upon holding the smartphone, you would immediately feel its matte textured backplate finish. The body is made up of plastic material, and sports two color variants: Night (Blueish-Silver color), and Dusk (Purple), which are both familiar to the Nokia mobile line of smartphones from previous releases but reflect a different appearance due to the body texture. Because of the matte finish, the device is less attracted to fingerprint smudges. It provides a good grip and is comfortable to hold because of the slim profile of the Nokia G10.

On the right side are the volume rocker, and the power button that also serves as the lock button and doubles as the fingerprint scanner. While on the left, we can find the three-card SIM tray that can house two nano-sized SIM cards and a micro SD memory card. Below the SIM card slot is a dedicated Google Assistant button. Up top is a 3.5mm audio port (headphone jack), alongside a secondary microphone. Down at the bottom resides the primary microphone, USB Type-C port, and speaker grills.

The Nokia G10 display is equipped with a 6.52″ IPS LCD panel with 1600 x 720 resolution. Color reproduction and viewing angles are good enough however it is lacking in vibrancy, which is more event when used outdoors. The overall resolution is fine, as well as the pixel density that is already ideal for watching HD videos and viewing photos.

Audio-wise, the speaker gives a thin volume when set to maximum, which is very typical for an entry-level device. It has a competitive performance in terms of volume for calls and casual audio listening. For a better experience, using wired headphones is recommended via its 3.5mm audio jack or a pair of Bluetooth earbuds.

The Nokia G10 camera setup packs a 13MP main camera sensor, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. | Skip The Flip

The Nokia G10 camera setup packs a 13MP main camera sensor, 2MP macro lens, and a 2MP depth sensor. Given that this is an entry-level smartphone, you can get an average-performing camera but you can still get decent quality for a smartphone of this specification and price range. Image output has clarity in colors, although there are some images that lack the kick but are still good for social media sharing online with its contrast yet less on the dynamic range aspect. The selfie performance is better with the availability of the HDR mode, and Night mode is also present that does its job of making the subject visible in a low light environment. On the other hand, the Portrait mode is kind of hit and miss with its 2MP depth sensor sometimes lacking the ability to separate the subject and the background. The 2MP macro lens is something you need not expect to deliver high-quality images given the entry-level specification. Overall it’s not perfect but the camera quality is good enough for social media uploading and photo documenting.

The video of the Nokia G10 can record up to 1080p at 30 frames per second (fps). The quality can be shaky since there is no Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), or Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) present.

For its operating system, the Nokia G10 runs on Android One certified stock Android 11 with a clean, and easy-to-navigate user interface. It’s pure Android OS with basic Google services and no other pre-installed third-party applications, which is great considering that there are only 48GB of usable space out of 64GB. But there is also a dedicated micro SD card slot (supported up to 512GB) for your files. Some users might find the Vanilla Android plain but they can easily remedy that by installing a launcher from the Google Play Store.

The Nokia G10 is powered by a MediaTek Helio G25 chipset with an Octa-core CPU and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The smartphone unit tested has 4GB RAM, and a 3GB RAM variant is also available.

Navigating the UI and launching the apps are pretty smooth, though they get sluggish sometimes when multiple applications are running in the background at the same time. Facial recognition also works well, and also the side-mounted fingerprint scanner for unlocking the device.

If you’re into gaming, the Nokia G10 can handle light games quite well. It is not for those who want to play graphic-intensive games given its entry-level chipset. The small RAM and storage add to the limitation of this smartphone. It’s good for social media use, online classes, or entertainment like watching HD videos and viewing images. When it comes to its power, it sports a 5,050mAh battery that should satisfy users who are looking for a daily driver that can last almost two days of casual use.
